About

Method Strategy is the independent consultancy of Andrew Valentine, a former Business Analytics Director with over a decade of experience building the KPI frameworks, reporting systems, and pricing experiments that operationally complex businesses run on..

Background

Over the last decade-plus in retail and operational analytics, I've built reporting systems and run experiments for businesses with thousands of physical locations, complex inventory dynamics, and tight unit economics. Most recently, as Director of Business Analytics at Automated Retail Technologies, I led analytics strategy, built kiosk-level demand forecasting and pricing models, and developed the systems that flagged machine failures and predicted downtime across the network.

Before that, I spent over a decade at Redbox Automated Retail in progressively senior roles across inventory analytics, strategy, operational analytics, and routing optimization. That's where I learned to build tools and reports that tell you what to do, not just what happened. With product constantly in motion and every unit's value shifting with its location, local supply, and its own demand curve (among many other factors), the reporting had to track the levers that could steer the system. So we ran experiments to learn which levers actually worked, then built those into reporting that the teams could use to run the system themselves.

And that's the whole idea behind my consulting. The problems I find most interesting are the complex ones you solve once and then leave running on their own. That means designing experiments rigorous enough to act on, fixing obsolete or broken KPI frameworks, and building reporting that holds up on messy operational data.

How I work

Clearly scoped up front. Every engagement starts with a written proposal covering what gets done, when, and for how much.

Senior delivery. I do the work myself and nothing is handed off or sub-contracted to others. Whatever I deliver is built directly by me, usually in close collaboration with teams on your side.

Documentation-first. Every project leaves behind documentation good enough for your team to extend the work without me.

Honest about uncertainty. The real world is full of shades of gray and ambiguity, and so is a lot of operational data. If there's not enough data to paint a clear picture, I'll communicate the uncertainty clearly.

Full-time focus. This is what I do. Clients get my full professional attention.

Tools & technical depth

Day-to-day work runs on SQL, Tableau, PowerBI, Metabase, AWS Redshift, Python, and increasingly AI-assisted development tooling like Claude Code for analytics automation.

Having worked with plenty of analytics consultants from the client side, the most common failure mode I've seen is solutions that don't survive contact with the actual data infrastructure once the consultant leaves. I build against your warehouse, not around it.

Location & working hours

The LLC is registered in Chicago, Illinois, and I'm physically based in Valencia, Spain. All work is fully remote. I take on clients in US Central, US Eastern, and UK time zones, typically based in Chicago, New York, Boston, Washington DC, Atlanta, Miami, London, or Birmingham, though location is flexible as long as the meeting hours work out.

Education

Bachelor of Science, Geography & Geographic Information Systems - Northern Illinois University, 2005-2009. The spatial analysis background ended up being more directly useful than expected for distributed network problems.
